First, a little bit of background.
Radiation produces free-radicals ("inflammatory molecules") that damage cells that make up tissues such as organs, glands, muscles, and bones. Besides causing the cells to age more quickly they also become distorted, or mutated, creating cancers such as leukemia, anemia, birth defects, and other diseases.
Sulfur has a long history of use as an antidote for acute exposure to radioactive material. DMSO is the classical sulfur compound. A Japanese study showed that even low concentrations of DMSO had radio-protective effects through the facilitation of DNA double-strand break repair, providing protection against radiation damage at all cellular levels in the whole body.

Meltdown feared at Fukushima nuclear plant after quake

A core meltdown may have occurred at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima Prefecture that was damaged in a massive earthquake on March 11, a government regulator said on March 12.
Cesium from nuclear fuel was detected in radioactive materials in a monitored zone at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant's No. 1 reactor, according to the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency (NISA).
Earlier in the day, radiation leaks were confirmed at the plant. Eight times the normal amount of radiation was detected at the front gate of the plant, and 1,000 times the normal amount was detected in the central control room for the plant's No. 1 reactor, the NISA said.

Active warnings from the Pacific Tsunami Center include Hawaii, California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska.
The magnitude 8.9 earthquake, the largest ever recorded in Japan, struck Friday at 2:46 p.m. Tokyo time. That's 12:46 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, a 14-hour difference.
Its epicenter was about 231 miles from Tokyo, unleashing a 13-foot tsunami that swept boats, cars, buildings and tons of debris miles inland.
Officials have reported at least 60 deaths and at least 56 people missing. That death toll is expected to climb as the massive rescue operation in Japan continues.
To put it in perspective, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti was magnitude 7.0. ~ Sods
